The doorbell gives you a clear view on your smartphone or computer of "who's there", and the companion echo can be used for dozens of spoken cues for all your automated tasks, from playing music, to calling up web pages, to turning lights and appliances on and off, raising and lowering temperature, etc. And you can use the Echo device to talk with people at the front door.
The Ring records all doorbell interactions (motion sensors included) in the cloud, which is why package snatchers hate the thing. And even if you're in the attic, you'll know who is at the door and can communicate with them without immediately answering the door.
I like the fact that this combo will bring me into the modern day world of automation, protection, and permanent records of everything that happens on my from porch. And, technically, it's a video device, which is why I'm writing about it here.
