Often you need to scan pictures, slides, news clippings, yearbook photos and other flat items to create media for your video project. This is especially true in tribute, history, and documentary productions. The choices in this product range are numerous, but the quality varies. So we've put together a list of products we have found that does the job you need, in a range of prices.
The choices here are based on the need (slide scanning, flatbed scanning), resolution, ease of use, and price variation. Some flatbed scanners also scan slides, but we've also included dedicated slide scanners.
Epson Perfection V600 Color Photo, Image, Film, Slides, Negative & Document Scanner
This one I am using currently. It creates 6400 x 9600 dpi for enlargements up to 17 Inches x 22 Inches. Maximum Scan Area 8.5 x 11.7 inches. It has a slide holder which will handle 3 or 4 slides at one time with its built in transparency unit. It includes Digital ICE app for removing tears, creases, dust and scratches from prints, negatives and slides. It can handle panoramic film. It makes the list for having the most features and highest quality for the price.
Epson B11B207221 Perfection V370 Color Photo, Image, Film, Negative & Document Scanner
Flatbed scanner with built in transparency unit for beautiful film and negative enlargements up to 13 Inches x 19 Inches, or hi-res for video.
It can Access documents from mobile devices. Despite being smaller than it's bigger brother above, it can handle oversized documents because of the included stitching software .It has 4800 x 9600 optical resolution, slightly less than the 600 but definitely adequate.

HP® Scanjet G4050 High-Speed USB Photo Scanner, 4800 x 9600dpi
This is an odd duck, but a must include because it handles 16 slides at one time, or more if you just lay the slides down next to each other on the glass. This is the only unit I know in this price range that has backlighting for slides in the entire lid, making this batch processing possible. 4800 x 9600 dpi resolution produces high-definition scans. Includes HP Photosmart software to easily organize, edit, and e-mail photos without large file attachments. Features HP Real Life technologies to remove red-eye and enhance details in dark photos. Adjustable lid provides surprisingly realistic 3-D scans of books and larger items. But note: the best results with this scanner will be achieved with VUESCAN from HAMRICK (hamrick.com), a 3rd party scanning software that back-engineers and develops its own solutions for scanners like this tyhat are otherwise essentially abandoned by the manufacturer (although the do still sell it). When HP stopped making software for this scanner a few years back, there was an outcry and now there is current Windows 10 software from them, but it is somewhat flaky, and there is no MACOS software from HP. But get the Hamrick Vuescan software and you're in business!
